The Government of Canada has announced steps in creating a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Bill C-5 was introduced as a step to implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action number 80. The bill seeks to establish Sept. 30 as a federally regulated holiday.
The legislation is still subject to Royal assent. The new national day will honour survivors, their families and communities. It will also ensure that public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.
In 2019 to 2020 Canada invested in six national projects to educate and raise awareness about this dark chapter of Canadian History.
