The Federal Government announced steps today to advance the implementation of the Indigenous Languages Act.
Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage made the announcement that a series of virtual consultations will be held across Canada. This step is fulfilling an obligation in the act for the Minister to consult directly with Indigenous Peoples on the appointment of a Commissioner of Indigenous Languages, as well as up to three directors.
The Government of Canada plans to host close to 40 virtual consultations. This is a virtual relaunch of the in-person engagement sessions that started in Mar. in Whitehorse, YK. A selection committee will be created to support the appointment process for the positions of Commissioner and Directors of Indigenous Languages.
In early 2021, a virtual Indigenous Languages Symposium will be hosted by the federal government.
