The Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council (NTC) has denounced the actions of RCMP following the shooting of Rodney Levi on Friday night.
The Tribal Council says it stands with Chief Bill ward of the Metepenagiag Mi’kmaq, six Chiefs in the Wolastoqey First Nation and the New Brunswick AFN Regional Chief Roger Augustine in calls to end systemic racism in policing and the senseless killing of Indigenous Peoples.
An independent investigation has been called to investigate this incident. On Jun 12., around 7:40 p.m., the Sunny Corner RCMP Detachment received a call for service related to an unwanted person in a home on Route 425 in Boom Road. The RCMP said in a statement that when they arrived on scene they were confronted by a man carrying knives. A conductive energy weapon was deployed several times without success.
An RCMP member discharged a firearm. The man was treated at the scene for a gunshot wound, and was taken to hospital where he later died. No one else was injured. The Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council said in their own statement that they want to stress that investment in economic and social programs for on and off-reserve member must be part of the call to action.
Mariah Charleson, Vice President of the NTC states, “The NTC demands immediate change in policing. We can’t wait for more inquiries or inquests. The Council wants to see trained, unarmed, non-violent first responders responding to these sorts of crisis situations.
