A new partnership will see temporary housing near hospitals for people travelling from B.C.’s remote Indigenous communities for treatment.
Many Indigenous clients have to travel long distances from their home for health care, including women giving birth.
The provincial government and the First Nations Health Authority say the program will make it easier and more affordable for clients to attend medical appointments and for long-term medical stays.
“We are all looking forward to supporting families to have healthy and supportive stays when travelling far from home to access health care,” said Richard Jock, interim CEO, FNHA in a news release. “The First Nations Health Authority is looking constantly for creative ways to address access to needed medical care in ways that are culturally relevant.”
Exact locations and numbers of units that will be reserved for the First Nations Health Authority will be announced in the coming months.
