The Community-Based Research Centre said in a statement that it has let Indigenous people down again. The Research Centre also says in the statement, “Before we can have reconciliation, we must have truth.”
This is all related to the Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). PrEP is fully covered and relatively barrier-free.
Between 2016 and 2018 an estimated 500 Indigenous people in Canada contracted HIV. Many could have benefited from PrEP but didn’t know about it or didn’t know they could get it free of charge.
A report published by the BC Centre for Disease Control recommended that Health leaders should improve collaboration between Indigenous peoples, health care providers, health authorities and community based organizations.
