12 years ago today the Declaration on the rights of Indigenous peoples was adopted by the general assembly.
The declaration is the culmination of over 20 years of work.
It is the most comprehensive statement of the rights of indigenous people ever developed.
Today Premier John Horgan says,
“Implementing the principles of the Declaration, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, are central to our government’s commitment to meaningful reconciliation, as well as acknowledging that our words must translate into positive and tangible change for Indigenous communities and the province.”
Horgan also has plans to introduce legislation which the government is co-developing with the First Nations
Leadership Council. This will harmonize provincial laws with the declaration.
