The forests ministry is lifting a ban on some types of open burning in the Cariboo this week.
The Cariboo Fire Centre says category 2 open fires will be allowed again as of Friday due to decreased wildfire risk.
This will apply to all B.C. parks, crown and private lands unless otherwise specified. People are asked to check with local authorities before starting any fires.
Large category 3 fires will still be prohibited in the region until September 27, 2019 or until the public is otherwise notified.
Anyone found in contravention of the open burning prohibition may receive a ticket of $1,150. They may also have to pay administrative fees of up to $10,000 or if convicted in court could face fines of $100,000 and/or a year of jail time.
The Cariboo Fire Centre stretches from Loon Lake near Clinton in the south to the Cottonwood River near Quesnel in the north, and from Tweedsmuir Provincial Park in the west to Wells Gray Provincial Park in the east.
