Nearly four years after the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal found clear discrimination by the federal government, a ruling on compensation has been issued.
The ruling awards $2 billion in compensation Indigenous children and their families. The money is given to those children who were unnecessarily apprehended or denied essential services between 2006 and 2017.
The Canadian Human Rights Tribunal has ruled that $40,000 must go to each child apprehended or abused while in care or put in care due to lack of available medical supports.
Indigenous leaders in BC estimate more than 20 thousand children, youth, parents, and grandparents in this province could be covered by the ruling.
