According to BC’s First Nations Leadership Council, the federal government’s failure to pass Bill C-262 is “a clear step backwards for reconciliation”.
Initially adopted by the House more than a year ago, the Bill has been stuck in the Senate, ultimately leading to its failure to gain royal assent before the deadline.
Bill C-262 sought to officially write the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in to Canadian Law.
But, despite overwhelming vocal support from elected officials, the Bill failed to conquer the Senate prior to this session’s final recess on Friday.
Despite this, BC is continuing to work on provincial-level legislation to implement UNDRIP.
