BC has placed a moratorium on new resource development in the Northeast while they develop a long-term caribou protection strategy.
A temporary moratorium was one of 14 recommendations made in the Lekstrom report on caribou recovery.
In addition, the province has announced its intent to sign on to the Southern Mountain Caribou Bilateral Conservation Agreement.
Under the partnership agreement, they will work with Canada, local First Nations, and industry to help bolster caribou management plans.
BC has already agreed to work with the Saulteau and West Moberly First Nations on a long-term solution to the declining caribou populations.
