Canada is now experiencing a national climate change emergency, according to the House of Commons.
One day ahead of their landmark Trans Mountain Pipeline decision, the House passed a non-binding motion declaring the emergency yesterday.
Under the motion, put forward by Environment Minister Catherine McKenna, the House recognizes climate change as a “real and urgent crisis, driven by human activity”.
By a vote of 186 to 63, the motion passed through the House last night, despite the absence of all three major party leaders.
Federal Liberal, NDP, Bloc, and Green MPs all voted in favour of the motion, with the Conservatives and PPC’s voting against.
