Yet another forestry firm has announced more curtailments at two of its B.C. operations.
Tolko Industries is extending downtime at its Soda Creek and Armstrong lumber mills for an additional two weeks.
The company blames poor market conditions and uneconomic log costs.
Tolko Vice President Troy Connolly says the recent rash of curtailments and closures shows that current market and cost conditions are making it tough to operate in the province.
Connolly says, with significant increases to stumpage rates set to take effect in July, Tolko expects conditions to remain challenging.
He adds the decisions are difficult. but says the company want its people and their families to have time to prepare.
The downtime will take an additional 16 million board feet of capacity from Tolko’s lumber production.
Canfor announced the permanent closure of its Vavenby sawmill Tuesday and West Fraser more temporary curtailments at its B.C. operations.
