Tsilhqot’in Tribal Chair Chief Joe Alphonse says more can be done to promote historical Indigenous perspectives.
According to Chief Alphonse, the announced removal of a statue of BC’s first chief justice Matthew Begbie is welcomed, but is just the start.
New Westminster City Council recently voted to remove the statue, depicting a man who oversaw trials leading to the hanging of 6 Tsilqhot’in chiefs, from outside their courthouse.
Alphonse says he would like to see the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives in tellings of the Chilcotin War at venues such as Barkerville.
Barkerville is a historic town and national historic site which teaches visitors of the gold rush era in BC.
