A billion dollar mining project in Northern BC has been approved, but not without a number of stipulations.
This morning, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change announced that they were approving the Blackwater Gold mining project.
According to the federal Ministry, the approval comes after a thorough, science-based, assessment, and comes with 172 conditions.
Most of the conditions surround the protection of ecosystems in the area, such as wetlands, and fish and bird habitats.
But in addition to those, the Ministry also included stipulations to protect both physical and cultural Indigenous activities on the land.
According to project proponents New Gold Inc, the 1.8 billion dollar gold and silver mine will bring nearly 2 thousand total jobs over its 17 year life span.
The project crosses the territories of both the Ulkatcho and Lhoosk’uz Dené First Nations.
