UBCIC President Grand Chief Stewart Phillip called Tuesday’s stalling of Bill C-262 a “shameful moment for Canada”.
Bill C-262 seeks to establish a framework for collaborative work between First Nations and future governments.
It would guide the application and interpretation of human rights set by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
That bill was set to receive it’s second reading yesterday, but stalling tactics from Conservative Senators prevented that.
Grand Chief Phillip says these partisan stalling tactics could harm the continuation of urgent reconciliation work.
Once the bill receives its second reading it can be moved to committee for review and debate, but time is running short on this session of Parliament.
