With multiple energy sector projects in the area either acquiring or seeking approval, demand for skilled trades workers in the north is set to balloon.
Michael Cameron, Indigenous Initiatives Director for the Industry Training Authority, says their aim is to train workers in the communities where the jobs will be.
Cameron says their new community-based training model will help to achieve this.
According to Cameron, the model starts with seeking community input on what training is needed, then finding local funders and training providers.
Together, BCIT and the Kitimat Valley Institute, as well as Coast Mountain College, are currently exploring ways to bring more specialized training to northern and Indigenous communities.
