A recent increase in carfentanil detection has Interior Health warning drug users in the region.
During March, carfentanil was detected in 7 drug overdose deaths in the region.
In 2018, there were only 35 overdose deaths involving carfentanil across all of British Columbia.
Carfentanil is a more concentrated, and significantly more dangerous, synthetic version of fentanyl, which is undetectable by traditional methods.
In light of the spike, those using drugs or considering using drugs are asked to: avoid taking drugs alone, not mix drugs, pace yourself, and have a naloxone kit at the ready if needed.
