Communities hit hard by last summer’s wildfires may see some hot spots crop up as the weather warms.
The BC Wildfire Service says overwintering fires happen when a wildfire that burned deep underground last year has continued to smoulder throughout the winter.
Officials say some of these residual hot spots could flare up as warm, dry weather arrives in the spring.
It says firefighters are patrolling last year’s fire areas and scanning with thermal imaging technology.
The wildfire services is asking resident to report any wildfire or smoke they see, even if it is located within the perimeter of a previous fire.
To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.
