September 30th will now be known as National Truth and Reconciliation Day following the passing of a Federal bill yesterday.
Bill C-369 will turn what had previously been dubbed “Orange Shirt Day” as a statutory holiday.
According to the Fedral Government, the bill seeks to ensure public commemoration of the history and legacy of atrocities committed against Indigenous Peoples.
This includes honouring both residential school survivors, and the survivors, families and communities of other historical mistreatments.
After being passed in the House, the bill will now move to the senate to be put in to law.
