Today, British Columbia released their first ever poverty reduction strategy.
Dubbed TogetherBC, the strategy aims to reduce overall poverty by 25 percent and child poverty by 50 percent over the next 5 years.
TogetherBC will focus on improving 6 priority areas: affordable housing, supports for families and youth, income supports, expanding education and training access, providing more opportunites, and investing in social inclusion.
Under the Poverty Reduction Strategy Act, an Advisory Committee will be appointed to oversee progress, and government will be required to report progress.
BC has the second highest overall poverty rate in Canada and roughly 40 percent of those below the poverty line are working.
