Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chief Na’Moks says optimism was running high following Saturday’s Smoke Feast with provincial government leaders.
Premier John Horgan, along with Federal MPs, local governments, and other First Nations came together for the six hour event to discuss a new reconciliation process.
During the feast, the Premier acknowledged that the treaty process has its flaws and does not work for every Nation.
He recognized that each Nation has their own unique issues and that the province and country need to work together with the Nations.
Chief Na’Moks said he was pleased with the government’s willingness to take part in these discussions and called them a step in the right direction.
He added that the Wet’suwet’en aren’t trying to halt progress, only ensure their rights are recognized.
Both parties acknowledged this new process as a different one with potential to be historic.
