In honour of International Women’s Day, the province has announced a new initiative to help retain women in the construction industry.
Along with industry partners, WorkSafe BC, LNG Canada, the BC Construction Association, and the Industry Training Authority, the province launched their new Builders Code standard of conduct today.
With the new innovative code of conduct guiding the way, BC aims to become the first province to have women make up 10 percent of the construction industry by 2028.
Currently, women make up just 4.7 percent of construction trades workers.
By expanding safety definitions to include harrassment, stress and discrimination, and by offering innovative new ways to retain employees, the province hopes to revolutionize equality in the industry.
Minister of skills and training Melanie Mark kicked the pilot program off with a bang, announcing that Shelley Gray would be the first ever female CEO of the Industry Training Authority.
