A record setting investment in to the preservation of Indigenous languages in BC has been made by the provincial government.
Announced today, the 50 million dollars in provincial funding will help the First Peoples’ Cultural Council to document and build fluency in BC’s Indigenous languages.
Thanks to the new funding, the FPCC’s language program will be giving out 167 grants, a massive increase over last year’s 60.
On top of that, the number of people receiving training in language revitalization planning, immersion programs, and documentation has increased by 280 percent.
According to Tahltan Central Government Language and Culture Director Doctor Judy Thompson, the funding increase is vital as many of the languages’ remaining speakers are elderly.
With the new funding, the FPCC hopes to reach all First Nations in BC.
