Twelve of the fourteen Wet’suwet’en members arrested during last month’s RCMP injunction enforcement at a Gidimt’en checkpoint made their first court appearance yesterday.
Each of the fourteen face charges of contempt for defying a court order to allow Coastal GasLink pipeline workers access to the land.
During the proceedings, BC Supreme Court Judge Madame Justice Marguerite Church requested the intervention of BC’s Attorney General in the case.
According to Justice Church, it is in the best public interest to allow the Crown to intercede.
In order to give the Attorney General time to consider the matter, legal proceedings in the case have been adjourned until April 15th.
Ahead of that date, the courts will determine whether to continue proceedings in Prince George or to move them to Smithers, closer to the defendants’ homes.
