School District 72 will be providing Indigenous students with a new way to carve out their leaderships skills while helping non-Indegnous students with a different kind of carving.
Students at Carihi Secondary School on Vancouver Island will be undertaking in the carving of a traditional canoe, overseen by First Nations students and elders.
Wei Wai Kum, Wei Wai Kai, Homalco, and Klahoose First Nations Band Councils are all behind the project.
Delivered yesterday, the 5 foot by 30 foot western red cedar log being used for the project was sourced from traditional Wei Wai Kai territories, and delivered by BC Timber Sales.
This project was originally proposed by the Nanwakolas Council, who are comprised of six First Nations from the area.
