The federal government has announced funding to help northern B.C. Indigenous groups rebuild their nations, including governance and hereditary structures.
The Carrier Sekani Tribal Council will get nearly $600,000 to support a number of initiatives, including the development of community history books and workshops on governance, roles and responsibilities, clan systems, and hereditary systems.
The Tŝilhqot’in Nation will receive $205,000 toward self-determination efforts.
The money will fund stewardship responsibilities through the Tŝilhqot’in Ranger Program to maintain consistent Tŝilhqot’in land management values.
“By supporting nation-rebuilding efforts we support strong and self-reliant Indigenous nations that will have the capacity to govern effectively and fulfil their vision of self-determination,” said Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Carolyn Bennett in a news release.
Funding for the initiatives comes through the federal government’s Nation Rebuilding Program.
The government says the program is designed to help Indigenous groups build governance structures and institutions to exercise their rights, including self-government.
