Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is calling for the termination of the Trans Mounatin pipeline expansion, should every community on the route not buy-in following consultations.
Singh says the government needs to be open to saying no after the Federal Court of Appeals ruled they needed to redo consultations with First Nations and local communities along the proposed project’s path.
He was careful to clarify though, that Section 35 of the Constitution does not give Indigenous communities the right to veto federal projects.
Regardless, the leader says that the government needs to be committed to more than just checking boxes in their consultation process.
Singh was critical of the government’s handling of the process thus far, stating that “it’s not meaningful consultation if you’ve already decided the outcome”.
