Leadership from the Union of BC Indian Chiefs will gather for a press conference in Vancouver tomorrow to issue their reaction to a recent United Nations ruling.
As the result of years of advocacy from Indigenous woman Sharon McIvor, the UN has ruled that Indian Act sex discrimination is in violation of Canada’s international treaty obligations.
McIvor has been fighting in both Canadian and International courts for years after her marriage to a non-Indigenous man resulted in the loss of her status rights.
Ever since, she has been pleading for equality for women and their descendants under the Indian Act.
A number of speakers, including UBCIC President Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, will join McIvor at the conference tomorrow at 9:00 am.
You can find a live webcast of the event on UBCIC’s Facebook page.
