Mining operations in BC could be facing permanent restrictions on water use, pending public consultation.
In 2016 BC introduced the Water Sustainability Act and, with it, temporary restrictions on water use for mineral exploration and small-scale placer mines.
Under the new restrictions mining operations were required to seek authorization to use water during prospecting operations for the first time.
Now, with the province facing drought conditions across most of its area, the province is considering making these requirements permanent.
The public consultation period is open until November 26th.
