Williams Lake RCMP are pleading with residents to lock their doors and take valuables out of vehicles.
The plea comes after a 98% spike in the number of theft from vehicle reports compared to this time last year.
Police have received 125 reports of theft from vehicles this year, yet investigators say a number of the calls are to vehicles that were unlocked with valuables visible inside.
In most cases theft is a crime of opportunity. Don’t become a victim, remove valuables, lock your doors and report suspicious activity to police
says Inspector Jeff Pelley of the Williams Lake RCMP.
RCMP say some tips to curb property crime include:
- not leaving any property in your vehicle.
- using an anti-theft device.
- parking in open, visible areas.
- lighting your driveway at night.
- recording the serial numbers of all items of value.
Williams Lake RCMP say they are committed to targeting the multiple property offenders responsible for the thefts.
Police remind the public to report any suspicious activity immediately.
