The Williams Lake RCMP have officially brought back their bike patrol program, thanks to funding through the Community Safety and Targeted Enforcement Program (C-STEP).
The funding has allowed the detachment to purchase two new police e-bikes, along with the accessories and equipment needed for officers to patrol safely and effectively. It also supports additional overtime patrols in Williams Lake’s downtown core and local parks.
Officers assigned to the bike patrol have completed specialized police cycling tactics and skills training, equipping them to navigate areas that are difficult for traditional patrol vehicles to access.
RCMP say the bike patrol program improves officer mobility while increasing opportunities for positive interactions with residents. The program also promotes officer fitness and offers a cost-effective, environmentally friendly approach to community policing.
Staff Sergeant Brad McKinnon thanked local businesses Red Shreds and Cycle Logic for supplying the bicycles and necessary equipment.
“We’re pleased to let the public know that bike patrols are back, so expect to see officers out and about on two wheels,” McKinnon said.
The return of the bike patrol is part of ongoing efforts to enhance community safety and visibility throughout Williams Lake, particularly in high-traffic public spaces where bicycles allow officers to respond quickly and engage more directly with the public.
