Social media channels in Northern BC and the Yukon we’re buzzing yesterday with word that a woman had been kidnapped and was travelling under duress with her alleged kidnapper along remote stretches of the Alaska Highway and Highway 37.
The Northern Rockies RCMP have since confirmed that the woman mentioned in the posts has been found safe, and they say contrary to what was on social media yesterday, she had not been kidnapped.
No arrests had been made, and RCMP say to respect the privacy of those involved they’ve asked anyone who shared the woman’s name or photo on social media to consider removing the posts.
Sergeant Vanessa Munn with the BC RCMP says the police had been contacted just before 9:00 PM on the evening of May 31st to conduct a wellness check on a woman at the Laird Hot Springs. This person had already left the campground when police arrived but officers continued their attempts to locate her, which they eventually did on the afternoon of June 1st and were able to confirm she is in fact safe and sound.
