Today Tuesday May 5th is the National Day for Red Dress Day it marks the Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people.
As it honors the victims and survivors of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women crisis.
The day was inspired by the RedDress project created by Metis artist Jaime Black in 2009.
Its a solemn day to honor the victims there families, Symbia Barnaby from Haida and Migma Nations she is a traditional healer and family member to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people.
Barnaby explains what the day means to her.
”Raising awareness around missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and Two-Spirit is really important to me because one, I am an Indigenous woman. I am a survivor of family violence, and many family members that are close to me are also.” – Barnaby
Barnaby also said what she hopes for future Red dress Days ahead.
”I would really like to see, non-Indigenous people being able to have a deeper understanding about, this cause, build awareness, with allies so that they understand the connection between, provincial policies, federal policies, and things that impact Indigenous people.” – Barnaby
