British Columbia reached a major milestone in organ donation and transplantation in 2025, with a record 575 people receiving lifesaving transplants across the province.
According to BC Transplant, those transplants were made possible by 232 donors, including both deceased donors and living donors. Health officials say the record year shows the growing impact of organ donation on patients, families, and communities.
Kidney transplants led the way, with 357 completed last year — the highest number ever recorded in B.C. The province also saw 107 liver transplants, 66 double-lung transplants, 30 heart transplants, and 25 pancreas and islet transplants. Some patients received more than one organ during a single surgery.
The year also marked another historic achievement. More than 8,000 kidney transplants have now been performed in B.C. since the province’s first transplant in 1968.
Health Minister Josie Osborne thanked donor families and living donors for their generosity, saying their decisions leave a lasting legacy of hope. BC Transplant also recognized the health care teams across the province whose work makes donation and transplantation possible.
BC Transplant is encouraging people to register their decision to be an organ donor. Officials say registration helps ensure wishes are known and can make a critical difference for families and patients waiting for care.
