The B.C. government is introducing new fixed timelines for mineral exploration permits, a move designed to support the province’s booming mining sector. Starting April 1, 2026, exploration permits will be processed within 40 to 140 days depending on project complexity.
If a permit isn’t processed on time, applications can now be escalated to the chief permitting officer, who must make a decision within 14 days. This initiative is supported by a $3 million government investment, including funding for additional staff and the Mineral Claims Consultation Framework.
Minister of Mining and Critical Minerals Jagrup Brar says the changes respond to industry feedback while still protecting the environment and respecting reconciliation with First Nations. “These timelines, backed by new investment, will drive even further investment in the booming mining industry,” Brar said.
The move builds on a record year for exploration in B.C., with $751 million spent in 2025 and almost one million metres drilled. Industry leaders say accelerated permitting helps junior miners and prospectors, and ensures that today’s exploration projects can become tomorrow’s mines.
British Columbia is a global hub for mining and critical minerals, with approximately 1,000 companies and 40,000 workers in the sector. By 2040, new and expanded critical minerals projects could represent an investment opportunity of $44 billion.
