Police say they’ve seen plenty of unsafe vehicles over the years, but this one stood out.
A BC Highway Patrol officer has pulled an Acura off the road after discovering a makeshift door latch and several serious safety issues during a traffic stop.
It happened January 9th around four o’clock in the afternoon on Highway 3 near Christina Lake.
The grey Acura was clocked at 130 kilometres an hour in an 80 zone.
Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol says it was surprising the car could even reach that speed without falling apart.
He says the owner tried to patch up the damage with spray paint and dents hammered out, but the vehicle was far from roadworthy.
Police found the rear window missing replaced with rebar and duct tape and the driver’s door held shut by a welded garden gate latch.
The driver, a 22-year-old man from Kelowna, was ticketed for excessive speeding, had the vehicle towed and impounded for seven days, and now faces higher insurance costs for at least three years.
He was also issued an order requiring the vehicle to stay off the road until all repairs are completed and it passes a full inspection.
Corporal McLaughlin reminds drivers that any modifications to critical parts like doors, windows, brakes or steering must be inspected and driving an obviously unsafe vehicle, especially at high speed, won’t be overlooked by police.
