Residents of Kitimat will head to the polls on Saturday, October 17 for the 2026 general local election. This election will choose one mayor and six councillors to serve on the District of Kitimat council. Local elections are held every four years in British Columbia.
To vote, you must be at least 18, a Canadian citizen, and have lived in B.C. for at least six months. You also need to live in Kitimat when you register. People who own property in Kitimat but live elsewhere may also be eligible to vote as non-resident property electors, following specific rules.
Elections offer several ways to cast a ballot, including advance voting, special voting, and mail-in ballots. More information about these options will be shared as the election approaches. The District of Kitimat uses the Provincial Voters List, and residents can register, update, or remove their information through Elections BC.
For those considering running for office, the nomination period opens September 1. The mayor acts as chair of council meetings and serves as a community spokesperson, while councillors work with the mayor and fellow councillors to guide the direction of the community.
The District also provides supports for elected officials, including remuneration, childcare, and parental leave.
