Last week, Skeena MLA Claire Rattée had sent a scathing letter to BC’s Minister of Transportation, Mike Farnsworth, amplifying concerns sent to her throughout the week by constituents in Terrace and Kitimat decrying the road conditions along Highway 37, and the local perception that regional snow clearing contractor, Emil Anderson Group, has not been meeting its mandate.
MLA Rattée says constituents had told her that road conditions along Highway 37 between Terrace and Kitimat had become extremely hazardous last week, with little snow clearing taking place and limited application of salt and gravel for traction.
Rattée says she wants the Minister of Transportation to clarify what the contractual obligations are for snow clearing in the region, how the Ministry ensures compliance with those obligations, what avenues exist for enforcement of the contract, and if the Minister himself feels the current level of service in the Northwest is adequate, adding that a failure to address these concerns undermines the public’s trust in the department’s ability to deliver ‘basic infrastructure safety’.
