As holiday shopping increases, Penticton RCMP are reminding residents to take extra precautions to protect their deliveries from theft. Police say incidents of stolen packages, often referred to as “porch piracy,” tend to rise during the winter months when online shopping is at its peak.
Packages left unattended on doorsteps, in apartment lobbies, or in shared mail areas are common targets. RCMP recommend residents plan deliveries carefully by using secure pickup locations such as parcel lockers, post offices, workplaces, or the homes of trusted friends or family members. Choosing delivery options that require a signature and tracking packages closely can also reduce the risk of theft.
Residents living in apartments or condominiums are encouraged to speak with building managers about secure delivery areas. Police note that package thieves often look for easy opportunities and may move quickly between homes or follow delivery vehicles.
The RCMP are asking residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, including individuals checking doorsteps, mail areas, or walking door-to-door without parcels. Suspicious behaviour should be reported to your local RCMP non-emergency line with as much detail as possible.
