A series of weather alerts is in effect across northern B.C. today as a Pacific frontal system meets entrenched Arctic air, bringing snow, freezing rain, and rapidly changing road conditions from the Cariboo to Fort Nelson.
In the northern Cariboo, including Quesnel, a Special Weather Statement warns of a mix of snow and intermittent freezing rain through the day. Snow is expected to continue into the evening before tapering off overnight. While accumulations are not expected to reach warning levels, slippery roads and poor visibility may create hazardous travel.
The southern Cariboo, including Williams Lake, 100 Mile House, and Highway 97, is under a Snowfall Warning. Ten to fifteen centimetres of snow is expected by tonight, with the likelihood of freezing rain at times. Environment Canada warns that roads, walkways, and highways may quickly become snow-covered and difficult to navigate.
In Fort Nelson, a Freezing Rain Warning is in place. Two to four millimetres of ice may accumulate this morning before conditions shift to snow around noon. A separate Special Weather Statement highlights continued risks of snow, ice pellets and more freezing rain into the night. Travelers on Highways 97 and 77 should be prepared for icy, hard-to-detect surfaces.
Drivers across the region are urged to plan ahead, expect slow travel, and monitor updates as conditions change through the day.
