Local leaders reaffirm support for clean energy development while maintaining opposition to oil pipelines in Haisla territory
Haisla Nation and the District of Kitimat met with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith yesterday to talk about the future of sustainable energy development in Canada. The meeting focused on the long standing role Haisla traditional territory has played in major projects and its importance in shaping Canada’s energy landscape.
In their joint statement, Haisla Nation and the District highlighted how Kitimat has become a centre for large scale resource projects, supported through partnerships with Rio Tinto, LNG Canada, Cedar LNG and Coastal GasLink. Leaders said these partnerships show how Indigenous communities and municipalities can work together to build responsible, nation building projects that benefit local residents and Canadians.
The statement also invited new partners to work with them on projects that respect shared values, including environmental protection, collaboration and Indigenous leadership.
A key message delivered during the meeting was Haisla Nation’s continued opposition to any oil pipeline and export facility in its territory. The Nation firmly opposed the Northern Gateway project more than ten years ago and confirmed that its position has not changed.
Both Haisla Nation and the District of Kitimat say they look forward to continued work with governments, industry partners and neighbouring Nations to support economic growth and diversification in a way that aligns with reconciliation and community priorities.
