Coast Mountain College has confirmed it will close its Hazelton campus on June 30, 2026, as part of a major restructuring plan to address a $4-million budget shortfall. The financial pressure stems largely from a steep decline in international student enrolment, prompting the college to reduce its workforce by about 20 percent and streamline operations across northern B.C.
While the campus will close, the college stresses that educational services in Hazelton will not disappear. Programming will continue in community spaces when needed, and the college’s mobile training unit will be brought into the region to support future trades and academic offerings. Courses already scheduled for 2026—such as Introduction to Gitksanimx Language and Carpentry Foundations—are still expected to run, as long as there is enough student demand.
The Coast Mountain College Board of Governors has now endorsed a plan to sell the Hazelton campus property after its closure. The sale process will be managed alongside the provincial Ministry of Infrastructure, with the goal of transferring the site to another public sector agency. Any revenue from the sale will be placed in the college’s retained earnings and used for future capital projects that support students throughout northwest B.C., in line with provincial regulations.
