At a 2 p.m. press conference today, Tamara Davidson, Minister of Environment and Parks, and Inspector Kevin Van Dam of the BC Conservation Officer Service addressed the recent grizzly bear attack near Highway 20 in Bella Coola. Approximately 20 students and teachers were on a school outing when the bear attacked. Four people were seriously injured, and several others required medical attention. Families have requested privacy regarding the injured, and authorities are honoring that request.
The bear remains at large, and residents are being advised to stay indoors and avoid the four-mile area near the attack site. Teachers at the scene acted quickly to protect students, using bear spray and bangers, and have been praised for their heroic actions.
Conservation officers, alongside first responders and the RCMP, are conducting an active investigation, setting traps, and collecting forensic evidence to identify and safely capture the bear. Officials note that attacks on large groups are extremely rare.
The New Hulk Nation community has mobilized to provide support, offering food, smudging ceremonies, and crisis care. Ministry of Education and Child Care staff are coordinating with the school district to provide trauma and safety support for students and staff. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
