The Tahltan Nation is on the verge of ratifying a landmark Impact Benefit Agreement (IBA) for the Eskay Creek Revitalization Project. Leaders say the agreement reflects community priorities, including record-setting environmental protections, potential tax exemptions, and funding for housing, infrastructure, and an elders’ home in Tahltan communities.
For the first time, the IBA ensures all Tahltans, no matter where they live, receive direct benefits. A $40-million upfront payment is designated for one-time payments to individuals, expected to total approximately $10,000 per eligible person in 2026. Across the life of the project, Tahltans could receive an estimated $1.2 billion in cash, $570 million in contracts, and $184 million+ in wages.
The Tahltan Central Government, Tahltan Band, and Iskut Band have endorsed the IBA following independent legal reviews. Eligible voters can review the agreement at the offices of each band, and in locations with high Tahltan populations, including Prince George, Smithers, Terrace, Vancouver, and Whitehorse.
A ratification vote is scheduled for December 13 and 14, giving the community the final say on this historic agreement, which negotiators say sets a new standard for Indigenous benefit agreements in Canada.
