Public Health authorities are advising residents in Fort St. John and Northeast BC of several newly identified measles exposure locations. The notice is part of ongoing efforts to track and contain the spread of the virus after recent cases were confirmed in the region.
The first exposure site is Olympus Cards and Collectibles on November 12, between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Two days later, additional exposures may have taken place at the Walmart Supercentre from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and at the North Peace Leisure Pool between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Public Health has also listed the Fort St. John Hospital emergency department, where a potential exposure occurred from 6:15 p.m. on November 14 until 2:35 a.m. on November 15.
Residents who were at any of these locations during the specified times are asked to monitor for symptoms for 21 days after their possible exposure. Measles typically begins with fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed by a rash that appears several days later. Health officials stress that anyone who develops symptoms should call ahead before seeking medical care, so precautions can be taken to prevent further spread.
Further details on current measles activity, including other exposure locations and prevention information, can be found on the BC Centre for Disease Control website.
