A group of Indigenous women involved in a recent RCMP incident in Terrace has released a public statement. The spokesperson for the group said five women were violently arrested, denied medical care, and detained while attempting to intervene at a public event. The group emphasized that their priority remains healing, safety, and justice for themselves, their families, and the broader community. They stressed that the incident is not only about their personal experience but about preventing similar harm to other Indigenous women.
RCMP reported that officers were on patrol near the Best Western on Greig Avenue when hotel staff requested assistance with a woman who was intoxicated, unable to care for herself, and refusing to leave the premises. Six people were arrested during the response. One officer suffered minor injuries, and one individual was released to medical care. Videos of the arrests have circulated online, including footage showing an elderly Indigenous woman being taken into custody.
Due to ongoing legal proceedings, the group said they will not publicly discuss evidence, but reiterated their commitment to truth, accountability, and community safety. The spokesperson concluded by noting the group reserves the right not to comment further.
