The Nisga’a Nation is offering warm congratulations to the Kitsumkalum First Nation following their successful vote to ratify both their constitution and treaty. The decisive approval by Kitsumkalum members represents a historic moment and a major step forward toward self-government and Indigenous sovereignty.
President Eva Clayton expressed pride in the Kitsumkalum community and in Chief Councilor Troy Sam’s leadership throughout the process. The Nisga’a Nation celebrates alongside Kitsumkalum as they move toward reclaiming authority over their lands, resources, and internal affairs—transitioning away from governance under the Indian Act.
“Embracing change while honoring tradition takes courage and determination,” said Clayton. “We stand in solidarity with Kitsumkalum as they enter this new era of self-determination and opportunity.”
The Nisga’a Nation looks forward to continued collaboration and mutual support, reinforcing the shared goal of advancing Indigenous governance, rights, and accountability across British Columbia and Canada. This milestone highlights the strength of Indigenous communities working together to shape their futures under their own laws and values.
