Historic decision marks next step toward self-government
Kitsumkalum First Nation has officially ratified both its Constitution and the Kitsumkalum Treaty: A Living Agreement, following a strong community vote held November 1st.
Preliminary results show overwhelming support from members — 89.7% voted in favour of the Constitution, and 90.7% supported the Treaty. The double-majority vote required at least half of all eligible voters to cast a ballot, and more than half of those voting to approve each question.
Chief Councillor Troy Sam called it a proud day that honours generations who fought for recognition and secures a stronger future for children and grandchildren.
The Treaty now moves forward to ratification by British Columbia and Canada, with full implementation expected by 2028. Over the next three years, Kitsumkalum will focus on preparing for self-government, developing laws, restructuring governance, and exploring new economic opportunities.
