A major traffic upgrade is set to open in Prince Rupert as the new roundabout at Highway 16, McBride Street, and 2nd Avenue officially opens on November 1, 2025.
The project, valued at $9.2 million, was delivered by IDL Projects Inc. and began construction in spring 2025. All major construction is now complete, with minor utility work planned for next spring. The new roundabout is designed to enhance safety, ease traffic congestion, and improve pedestrian and cyclist access in one of the city’s busiest intersections.
BCNDP MLA Tamara Davidson says the project not only improves traffic flow but also replaces critical underground infrastructure such as water pipes. The upgrades include a multi-use pathway, LED lighting, tactile walking surface mats, bicycle ramps, and two new bus shelters.
Prince Rupert Mayor Herb Pond says the roundabout transforms the city’s main gateway, improving safety while supporting major water system upgrades. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure worked with the City of Prince Rupert to coordinate infrastructure improvements within the provincial right-of-way.
Drivers are reminded to travel carefully through the area and follow all posted signage.
