Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada and President Lee Jae Myung of the Republic of Korea announced a historic defence and security partnership during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Gyeongju. The Canada-Korea Security and Defence Cooperation Partnership is the first of its kind for Canada in the Indo-Pacific, providing a clear framework for accelerating military cooperation, enhancing interoperability, and strengthening regional stability.
The leaders also concluded negotiations on an Agreement on the Protection of Military and Defence Classified Information, establishing a secure framework for exchanging and protecting sensitive information. This agreement will support collaboration in defence procurement, industrial security, research, and operational coordination.
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific and demonstrates how Canada and Korea are deepening strategic ties to address evolving global security challenges. Leaders emphasized the economic benefits of closer defence collaboration, including innovation in defence industries and new opportunities for Canadian and Korean workers.
